Our Curriculum

A Programme for Every Stage

Three carefully structured pathways, each rooted in the European conservatoire tradition. Whether you are picking up the instrument for the first time or preparing for the concert platform, your tuition is designed around you.

How We Teach

Every programme at RaKumaNinoff is built on the same foundation: rigorous technique, deep musical understanding, and a repertoire chosen to challenge and inspire.

Lessons are always one-to-one. There are no group classes, no shortcuts, and no compromise on quality. Progress is measured not by the calendar but by genuine musical development.

We follow the ABRSM examination framework where appropriate, but our teaching extends far beyond exam preparation. Our students learn to love music, not merely to pass tests.

Beginner

Foundation Programme

Age 5 and above — all adults welcome

Pre-Grade 1 through Grade 2

A thorough grounding in technique, notation, and musicality. Suitable for complete beginners of all ages — children from age 5 and adults returning to the instrument after a break.

Learning Outcomes

  • Correct posture, hand position, and touch
  • Confident reading of treble and bass clef notation
  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios in all keys
  • Basic sight-reading and aural training
  • A varied repertoire spanning Baroque to contemporary
  • Optional ABRSM Grade examinations

The Foundation Programme moves at the student's own pace. Children and adults are taught separately, with age-appropriate repertoire and teaching methods. No prior musical knowledge is required.

Intermediate

Development Programme

All ages

ABRSM Grades 3–6

For students who have mastered the fundamentals and are ready to explore the full breadth of the piano repertoire. This programme deepens technique, broadens musical understanding, and prepares students for examinations and recitals.

Learning Outcomes

  • Advanced scales, arpeggios, and technical exercises
  • Harmonic analysis and stylistic interpretation
  • Repertoire spanning Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th-century periods
  • Sight-reading and aural skills to examination standard
  • Preparation for ABRSM Grades 3–6 examinations
  • Introduction to performance practice and recital preparation

Students at this level are expected to practise regularly between lessons. We work closely with parents of younger students to establish effective home practice routines.

Advanced

Mastery Programme

All ages

ABRSM Grades 7–8, Diploma, and beyond

Concert-level preparation for the most committed students. This programme is suitable for those pursuing music professionally, preparing for conservatoire auditions, or seeking the highest standard of personal achievement.

Learning Outcomes

  • Concert repertoire from all major periods and styles
  • Advanced performance practice and interpretation
  • Competition and recital preparation
  • University and conservatoire audition coaching
  • ABRSM Grade 8, DipABRSM, LRSM, and FRSM preparation
  • Chamber music and accompaniment skills where relevant

Entry to the Mastery Programme is by assessment. Students are expected to demonstrate a high level of commitment, consistent practice, and the technical foundation to support advanced study.

What to Expect in Lessons

Technical Work

Every lesson begins with scales, arpeggios, and technical exercises tailored to the student's current programme. Technique is never neglected in favour of repertoire.

Repertoire Study

Pieces are chosen collaboratively, balancing the teacher's expertise with the student's interests. We draw from the full canon of piano literature.

Sight-Reading & Aural

Regular sight-reading and aural training are integrated into every lesson. These skills underpin all musical development and are essential for examination success.

Music Theory

Theory is taught in context, not in isolation. Students learn to understand the music they play, not merely to reproduce it.
